Glasgow: Two buildings in the west end are getting a new purpose. They’ll be used to help homeless folks find temporary shelter. It’s a big step in tackling the housing crisis here.

The council has decided to lease properties on Queen Margaret Drive and Wilton Street. This move comes as homelessness numbers keep climbing. They want to reduce the use of hotels and B&Bs for housing.

Last year, the city faced a serious issue. There were over a thousand times when they couldn’t provide homes for those in need. That’s just unacceptable.

One of the buildings on Queen Margaret Drive can house 34 people. The council plans to renew its lease for another ten years. The Wilton Street townhouse will support 13 people.

Officials say using hotels and B&Bs isn’t a good long-term solution. They need to find better options for vulnerable households. It’s all about making sure everyone has a safe place to stay.

With the new deal, rent for the Queen Margaret Drive property will go up a bit. It’ll be around £165,000 a year. The Wilton Street lease will cost £65,000 annually.

These buildings have been part of the community for a while. The Queen Margaret Drive tenement has been leased since 1993. It’s time to keep it going and help those who need it most.

Glasgow has seen a rise in homelessness applications lately. The UK Government’s changes to the asylum process have added to the demand. It’s a tough situation, but the city is stepping up.
