A Guildford coffee roastery opens its doors, inviting everyone to enjoy a unique coffee experience and learn about the roasting process.
Guildford: A new coffee roastery is opening up to the public. This means you could sip the same coffee enjoyed by stars like Jeff Goldblum and Ariana Grande. Cannon Coffee is ready to share its passion for coffee with everyone.
Located on Clay Lane, near Sainsbury’s, this place usually sells to cafes. Now, they want to let customers in to see how their coffee is made. It’s a chance to learn about the whole process.
Chris Foulkes from Cannon Coffee shared that they supply many cafes in the south. They also fix espresso machines. Until now, they’ve mostly focused on wholesale sales.
With their new location, they’re excited to shift to retail. They want people to come in, taste coffee, and buy bags to take home. Previously, they were tucked away in the woods, so this is a big change.
They hope visitors will learn about coffee roasting and enjoy some treats. Chris mentioned they’ll have a coffee trailer for croissants and coffee. As you enter, there’s a shop with coffee-making essentials like mocha drops and small espresso machines.
Once you pass the shop, you’ll see the roastery. It’s cool to watch coffee being roasted and see the green coffee beans. Many people don’t realize coffee comes from a seed inside a cherry. It’s funny how ads show roasted coffee, but it all starts with that cherry.
They roast about a ton of coffee each month. Chris explained it’s a technical process, involving temperature and airflow control. He joked that it’s like a washing machine and a barbecue combined, but with more tech.
Interestingly, they also supply coffee to movie sets. Chris said they’ve worked on shows like Bridgerton and Slow Horses. They know Jeff Goldblum and Ariana Grande have enjoyed their coffee on set.
Since opening in 2021, they’ve built strong relationships with farmers. Chris emphasized they pay much more than fair trade prices. They know exactly what’s happening on the farms and can talk directly to the farmers.
They offer coffee from four origins: Colombian, Brazilian, Chinese, and Ugandan. Chris explained that Ugandan coffee is sweet and fruity, while darker roasts have a different flavor profile. Their signature blend is a crowd-pleaser, with chocolate and nutty notes.
While there are many roasters, none locally allow walk-ins. They want more people to come in, smell the coffee, and maybe try a few before buying. The roastery is already open, with an official opening on January 11. Check it out!
