Glasgow: It’s a bittersweet moment for The Baby Grand. This beloved spot is closing after more than 40 years. The last day will be January 30.

Billy McAneney, the owner, opened the piano bar in 1984. He reminisced about how the area has changed. Once bustling, it’s now quieter.

Billy mentioned that losing nearby offices affected the vibe. He said, “It’s not what it once was.” The Baby Grand was a lively place, but times have changed.

The venue will be demolished for a big £250 million redevelopment. New homes and student accommodations are on the way. Billy’s partner, Jamie, feels it’s a fitting end.

He said, “It was a big part of Glasgow’s nightlife.” Jamie prefers this closure over a new owner changing everything.

Billy shared a quote that sums up The Baby Grand perfectly. It’s from Pete Irvine, who said, “Only real cities have places like this.”

He also noted that many new bars pop up, but few have the same history. The Baby Grand was a true Glasgow institution.

Billy joked about not crying over the closure. When asked about relocating, he said, “Almost certainly not, but never say never.”

The venue is famous for its live piano music. Pianist Bill Finlayson has played there since the start. He loves the connections he’s made over the years.

Danny Thomson also performs there on weekends. Both pianists will be missed dearly. Billy wants to ensure they find new gigs.

Many locals are heartbroken. Iain Burke shared his memories, calling it an iconic destination. Fiona Sutherland wished they could move the venue instead of demolishing it.

Malcom Ross expressed his disappointment, calling it a dark day for Glasgow’s hospitality.

To celebrate its final days, The Baby Grand is bringing back select dishes at 1984 prices. They’ll also keep the live music tradition alive until the end.

You can visit The Baby Grand at Elmbank Gardens, open until January 30. It’s a chance to say goodbye to a cherished part of Glasgow’s nightlife.
