Walton-on-Thames: Exciting news! Plans for new office spaces in the town center just got approved. The goal? To breathe new life into the struggling high street.

They’re adding two extra floors above the Halifax bank. This will create more office space right in the heart of the town. Sounds promising, right?

Initially, there were concerns. Some folks worried the new height would overshadow nearby flats. The building will rise about 5.5 meters, which could be a bit much for the neighbors.

But Councillor Barry Cheyne had a different take. He believes bringing more people into Walton is crucial. More offices mean more jobs, which could help local shops thrive.

At a recent council meeting, most members agreed. They felt the economic boost was worth it, even if it meant a taller building. Cllr Kirsty Hewens emphasized the need for revitalization.

She pointed out that more office workers could mean more customers for local cafes and shops. Cllr Steve Bax echoed her thoughts, calling it a potential “shot in the arm” for the high street.

Interestingly, despite some worries about noise from nearby businesses, no residents formally objected. In fact, some even supported the plans, seeing the need for more offices.

One local funeral director did express concerns about noise affecting their services. They need a peaceful environment for families visiting.

For now, the council has set conditions to ensure the project is done right. They’ll be keeping an eye on materials used and even adding bike parking.
