Residents are worried about a new off licence in Glasgow, fearing it may worsen local drug issues and anti-social behavior in the area.
People are concerned that selling alcohol might lead to more trouble. They’ve seen folks urinating and using drugs nearby, and they don’t want to see kids getting alcohol from older users.
However, the store’s representative argues that the shop will actually help improve safety. They plan to have 24-hour CCTV and good lighting to deter troublemakers. Khalid Javid got the green light from the licensing board for the off sales licence.
During the meeting, a neighbor pointed out the lack of public toilets, which leads to people urinating in the street. They believe selling alcohol will only add to the problems.
Another resident raised worries about violence and drug issues in the area. But the lawyer for the applicant mentioned that Mr. Javid has 11 shops in Scotland and has never had issues with licensing before.
She also highlighted that the shop would create 12 jobs and that the nearest store is a mile away. The solicitor reassured the board that security is a top priority.
They believe a well-lit shop with constant surveillance will help keep the area safer. The representative noted that the building had been empty for a long time, so it’s good to see someone moving in.
In response to concerns about underage drinking, a resident pointed out that drug users could still buy alcohol for kids. He claimed he’s seen it happen.
A Police Scotland rep mentioned that the crime stats don’t reflect the actual violence in the area. It’s a complex situation, and the community is understandably anxious about the changes.
