An MSP urges rejection of a salmon farm in Loch Lomond, citing risks to wildlife and the environment, as locals voice strong opposition.
Balloch: There’s a lot of buzz about a proposed salmon farm in Loch Lomond National Park. An MSP, Ariane Burgess, is really pushing back against it.
She argues that this farm could harm the beautiful waters and wildlife. The plan was already turned down last year but is back on the table after an appeal.
Local folks are not happy about it either. They’re worried about the impact on the stunning scenery and the wildlife that calls Loch Long home.
This farm would use a new method, keeping fish in nets within floating enclosures. Some say it’s a good idea for the environment, but others think it’s risky and untested.
The final call is up to the SNP ministers. It’s been almost two years since they decided to reconsider the application, even after it was rejected before.
Loch Long is a haven for seals, otters, and seabirds. It’s also linked to the Endrick Water, which is home to endangered wild salmon.
Burgess emphasizes that the area is known for its natural beauty and cultural significance. She believes the salmon farm could ruin the iconic coastline and harm local wildlife.
She’s calling on the Scottish Government to listen to the community and reject the application once and for all.
Recently, a Holyrood inquiry suggested stricter regulations for the salmon industry but didn’t call for a halt to its growth, which some campaigners wanted.
Burgess is all for a pause on new salmon farms. She feels the industry is unsustainable and harmful to marine life and the environment.
Back in October 2022, the Loch Lomond park authorities rejected the farm proposal, saying it wasn’t suitable for such a large-scale operation.
However, the SNP government later said the new technology involved raised important national issues.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Government mentioned they’re carefully considering the appeal and will make a decision soon. Loch Long Salmon has been asked for their thoughts on the matter.
