A Kirkintilloch family endures a tough journey as their two children face serious health challenges just years apart
Abby and Gary welcomed their son Jack during the pandemic in 2020. But just ten days later, he was in the hospital. He couldn’t keep food down, and it was scary.
Doctors found out he had Pyloric Stenosis. It’s when the stomach and small intestine don’t connect properly. Jack needed surgery, and it was a lot for first-time parents.
Abby shared how daunting it was to be alone in the hospital during such a stressful time. After surgery, Jack took a while to recover, but he eventually got better.
In October 2021, they were thrilled to learn they were expecting a girl. But worry crept in. Would she have the same issues as Jack?
Their daughter Sophia arrived in July 2022, but soon after, she had choking episodes. A visit to the doctor revealed a heart murmur.
Tests showed Sophia had heart defects, including a hole in her heart. Abby was heartbroken. It felt unfair that both kids were facing health challenges.
Sophia needed open-heart surgery and was on the waiting list for almost two years. Thankfully, she’s now recovering well and showing her vibrant personality.
The siblings are thriving after receiving excellent care at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. Abby and Gary are incredibly grateful to the medical staff.
They plan to host a fundraiser for the hospital and participate in the Kiltwalk this April to give back. It’s been a tough journey, but they’re hopeful for the future.
