Woking’s Victoria Way is back open after a month-long closure caused by storm damage, restoring vital access for traffic and pedestrians.
Woking: A major road in Woking town centre has finally reopened. It was closed for a month, right during the busy holiday season. Now, both cars and pedestrians can use it again.
The Woking Borough Council announced the good news on Wednesday morning. They said, “Victoria Way has reopened to traffic and pedestrians this morning, marking the end of the temporary closure.”
This road had to shut down on December 7 after Storm Darragh caused some serious damage. Panels from the Hilton Hotel were at risk of falling, which made it unsafe for everyone.
After about five weeks, the road is now safe for public use. Cllr Ann-Marie Barker, the council leader, expressed her relief. She said, “The safety of the public has always been our priority.”
The closure was a real hassle for drivers and walkers. Victoria Way is one of Woking’s main routes, and being closed during the festive season made it even worse.
On January 7, a spokesperson for the construction company working on the hotel said repairs were going well. They expect everything to be finished by mid-January.
Cllr Barker acknowledged the challenges the closure caused for everyone. She thanked residents and businesses for their patience. However, she also warned that more work might be needed in the future.
“We are monitoring the situation closely,” she added, keeping everyone informed about the ongoing repairs.
