London: Environmental campaigners are really worried about the Heathrow expansion. They say it could be a disaster for the environment. Reports suggest the Chancellor might support this project soon.
Rachel Reeves is expected to back the third runway in a speech. She’s also looking at expansions for Gatwick and Luton Airports. Critics are saying this is a bad idea, especially during a climate crisis.
Alethea Warrington from the climate charity Possible said approving these expansions would be a huge mistake. She believes it won’t help the economy and will only benefit frequent flyers.
She thinks the government should focus on better trains and buses instead. Jenny Bates from Friends of the Earth echoed these concerns. She called the potential decision to expand Heathrow “hugely irresponsible.”
She pointed out that 2024 is crucial for climate goals, and this expansion would only worsen air pollution and noise for local residents.
The third runway at Heathrow got Parliamentary approval back in June 2018 but has faced delays due to legal issues and the pandemic. Right now, Heathrow hasn’t submitted a new application for development.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has some important deadlines coming up for Gatwick and Luton. Meanwhile, Paul McGuinness from the No 3rd Runway Coalition said other airport expansions could make Heathrow’s plans unfeasible.
A government spokesperson said they want to boost the economy while keeping environmental goals in mind. They stressed that any expansion must show it contributes to growth.
There are also talks about supporting a new road link between Kent and Essex and a Universal Studios theme park in Bedford.
