Recent data shows a troubling increase in Glasgow’s sex offender population, highlighting specific postcodes with the highest counts.
Out of these, 844 are living in the community. The rest are either in custody or receiving treatment in hospitals. Across Scotland, there are 5,187 registered sex offenders in the community, with another 2,240 in jail or hospitals.
The area with the most offenders is G32, which covers Barlanark and Cambuslang. It has 63 offenders. Following that are G20 in North Kelvinside/Maryhill with 46, and G51 in Govan/Ibrox with 42.
Interestingly, only one Glasgow postcode made the top ten for Scotland. Motherwell and Hamilton in Lanarkshire have the highest numbers, with Motherwell leading at 92 offenders.
As of December 31 last year, 13 sex offenders were wanted by Police Scotland. Most of them are believed to have left the UK.
Police Scotland uses a system called MAPPA to manage these offenders. This involves various agencies working together to assess and manage risks. They aim to keep the public safe through prevention and early intervention.
A police spokesperson emphasized their commitment to safety. They work hard to protect those at risk and ensure offenders are monitored in the community. Each local division has a dedicated team to enforce laws related to sex offenders.
While they can’t eliminate all risks, they want to reassure the community that they’re taking all necessary steps to keep everyone safe.
