Glasgow City Council got a surprise £1m donation after the Tollcross factory closure, raising questions about transparency and local impact.
The factory had been around for ages and employed hundreds of locals. When it closed in 2022, it left many people without jobs. There was a lot of noise about it, but the Turkish company that owns McVitie’s, called Pladis, went ahead anyway.
Local politicians were not happy about the closure. They tried to save those jobs, but it didn’t work out. The factory made popular biscuits like Digestives and Hobnobs, so you can imagine how much it meant to the area.
Now, the Daily Record says that Pladis gave this donation to the council, but they wanted to stay anonymous. The council only told its members about it in a private meeting, which raised some eyebrows.
John Grady, the MP for Glasgow East, is asking the council to be open about how they’ll use this money. He wrote to them before they revealed who the donor was, questioning if it’s right to keep it a secret.
He’s worried that not knowing who gave the money could lead to conflicts of interest. Grady wants the council to be clear about everything, so people can trust that the donation is legit.
He believes that if someone is giving a big chunk of money, the public deserves to know how it’s being spent. The closure of the McVitie’s factory hit the local economy hard, especially in Tollcross. He hopes the council invests this money back into the community.
So, it looks like there’s a lot to unpack here, and folks are eager for answers.
