Paediatric Diabetes Team
New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton.
The Children’s diabetes multidisciplinary team (MDT) is a group of professionals serving the children and young people of Wolverhampton and surrounding areas.

Outpatient Clinics are held solely at New Cross Hospital. Paediatric diabetes clinics are held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the Children’s outpatient department for 0-16 year olds. Transition clinic is held monthly on Monday afternoon at the Wolverhampton Diabetes centre, catering for 16-19 year olds.

Inpatient facilities for the 17 year olds and under are in the Children’s wards (A21) at New Cross Hospital, adult wards cater for the over 17s dependent on patient choice.

Diabetes Team Philosophy
Our team believes that our role as health care professionals is to deliver quality care by delivering age appropriate, up to date, consistent information and providing support in management. We aim to be a responsive service and work in partnership with our children and young people to ensure that this knowledge is suited to their needs. We believe that this knowledge will empower children and young people to gain the necessary skills in self -management and will help them and their families to make informed choices and set appropriate targets for their short and long term management goals.

Team Members
The MDT consists of 2 Consultant Paediatricians with special interest in diabetes, 2 Paediatric diabetes nurse specialists (PDSN) and 1 paediatric dietician with special interest in diabetes WTE). In the transition clinic, there is an adult diabetologist and diabetes specialist nurse with interest in Transition.

Referrals for newly diagnosed patients
All new paediatric patients with a suspicion of diabetes MUST have an urgent same day referral to the Paediatric Assessment Unit via Bed Bureau followed up with a discussion with the on call Paediatric Registrar (via switchboard 01902307999). See referral pathway.

Access for advice for existing patients
The PDSNs are available for advice and information between 8am-6pm.

For non-urgent queries, a voicemail message can be left on 01902695176 which will be addressed the following day.
